Country Lore: Dig a Bucket-Size Root Cellar
A 5-gallon bucket and bucket-size hole are all you need to make a simple root cellar for carrots.

I remember watching Family Outing and in some of the villages, they used those giant ceramic kimchi jars in fields to hold vegetables for the denizens over winter. I thought that was pretty neat and a good way to make sure everyone in the village has food for winter.
